The 35-year-old man reportedly suffered an abnormal heart rhythm after eating the aphrodisiac, and was admitted to the hospital complaining of chest and abdominal pain.
The substance is sold at sex shops and area stores under names including Piedra, Love Stone, Jamaican Stone, Black Stone and Chinese Rock. Buyers are usually unaware the substance is illegal and dangerous.
Health officials say the toad venom aphrodisiac, which is supposed to be applied to the skin, is harmful in any use.
Toad venom poisonings in the early 1990s prompted health officials to issue citywide warnings.
