Fire on USS George Washington Injures 24 Sailors

A fire broke out on the USS George Washington Thursday morning injuring 24 sailors. The fire was sparked near an air conditioning and refrigeration space on the ship. It spread to several spaces along a cableway.

The crew was able to extinguish the fire after a couple of hours. “There’s only one word for the effort this team made to combat the fire and that is heroic. The effectiveness of the damage control effort also clearly demonstrated the quality of our training procedures and systems,” said the carrier’s commanding officer Captain Dave Dykhoff.
