Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai has returned to Zimbabwe and has said he will participate in the June 27 presidential run-off against current leader Robert Mugabe.
Tsvangirai has insisted he won the March election with a majority of the votes yet officials put the final numbers at 47.9 percent while Mugabe held 43.2 percent.
Mugabe has held the presidential office since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980 and many people believe he will do whatever it takes to remain in office. Mugabe has been accused by Tsvangirai of promoting violence against his opposition party and using force to intimidate his supporters, a claim Mugabe has denied.
Hospitals in Zimbabwe have seen a steady flow of injured opposition supporters, something Tsvangirai blames on Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party.
For nearly two months Tsvangirai has remained outside of Zimbabwe due to the fear of assassination. He spent the majority of his time in South Africa but returned to Zimbabwe on Saturday and declared he would win the run-off.
