British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is under fire from the Chinese government for meeting with the Dalai Lama on Friday, calling the 30-minute discussion an interference in their internal affairs.
China has been critical of any world leader meeting with Tibet’s exiled leader and Brown’s meeting was no different. China’s foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang stated, “This is interference in China's internal affairs and also seriously hurts the feelings of the Chinese people.”
China has long held the belief that Tibet fell under the rule of the Chinese government yet Tibetans have contended that they are an independent nation free of Chinese authority. In 1950 China sent forces into the Himalayan territory and established a forceful claim.
The meeting between Brown and the Dalai Lama was said to address the recent earthquake that devastated China and killed an estimated 80,000 and how best to provide aid.
Chinese authorities were upset with Brown’s talks with the Dalai Lama concerning alleged human rights violations and Qin expressed anger over the invitation extended to the Dalai Lama to address British parliament on China’s human rights record.
