FARC Rebels Confirm Death of Manuel Marulanda

The leader of Colombia’s leftist rebel group FARC, Manuel Marulanda, has been confirmed dead by the militant group.

Members of FARC reported that Marulanda suffered a heart attack on March 26 and died with those he served.

Marulanda, 78, was the founder and top commander of FARC and was believed to be in poor health over the past several years.

Considered a Marxist-Leninist socialist guerilla organization by their own standards, FARC is dedicated to overthrowing the government of Colombia. Along with Colombia, the United States, European Union and Canada consider FARC a terrorist organization.

It is believed Alfonso Cano will fill the position as top commander of FARC.
