Robert Mugabe has accused the United States of meddling in Zimbabwe’s political affairs and has threatened to expel the U.S. ambassador “if he makes one more step wrong.”
Mugabe was speaking at a rally in Harare where he was launching his campaign for re-election as president when he made the accusations about ambassador James McGee. According to Mugabe the U.S. ambassador had interfered with the country’s political process when he began making reports about violence during the election period.
According to McGee there has been widespread violence throughout the election process, most of it being orchestrated by Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party against those who support opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Mugabe has been Zimbabwe’s President since they gained independence in 1980 but many felt he was defeated earlier this year by Tsvangirai who heads the Movement for Democratic Change. After official results were revealed Tsvangirai was shown to have a larger percentage yet not enough for an outright win, thus a run-off election was announced.
Tsvangirai returned to Zimbabwe on Saturday to begin his campaign after he spent the last six weeks out of the country for fear of an assassination attempt.
