China Hit by Strong Aftershock, More than 70,000 Homes Collapse

The devastating aftermath of China’s May 12 7.9-magnitude earthquake continued to unfold as the country was hit by a powerful 5.8-magnitude aftershock in the Sichuan province on Sunday.

The latest temblor destroyed nearly 70,000 homes and injured more than 400 people while leaving at least one dead.

Office buildings 800 miles away in Beijing swayed as the earthquake shook the already decimated area in southwest China and now officials have a growing concern about potential dam bursts that could further accentuate the catastrophe.

According to the government nearly 400 dams were damaged by the initial quake and with each aftershock the structures take an additional beating, spreading fear that a massive flooding of the area could take place if they were to crumble.

Since the May 12 disaster a reported 62,664 people have died and the government has said that figure could reach 80,000.
