At least seven people were killed in Iowa and a 2-year-old child was killed in Minnesota after devastating tornadoes ripped through the states on Sunday destroying homes and buildings and knocking out power across the region.
Northeast Iowa was ravaged by tornadoes and caused the majority of casualties as five were killed in Parkersburg while another two were killed in nearby New Hartford. At least 50 people were left injured in the area as schools, offices and homes were left in ruins.
In Hugo, Minnesota a tornado was responsible for the death of a 2-year-old and her parents and sibling were left with injuries as the twister struck their home in the St. Paul suburb. More than 20 people are missing and with the Memorial Day weekend officials are finding it difficult to determine if those people are injured or out of town.
Hundreds of homes in both Minnesota and Iowa remain vacant as authorities have refused to allow residents back in to their houses due to dangerous conditions.
