Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr was tapped as the Libertarian Party presidential nominee on Sunday after defeating Mary Ruwart following six rounds of balloting.
Barr, frustrated with the direction of the Republican Party, broke ranks in 2006 and gravitated to the ideals of the Libertarian Party. Following his nomination Barr announced Wayne Allyn Root as his vice-presidential nominee.
The nomination of Barr was also believed to be the end of Mike Gravel’s political aspirations. Gravel, a one time Democratic presidential hopeful, moved to the Libertarian Party after he became disgruntled with the Democratic Party’s nomination process and change in ideals.
