Italian police launched several raids just north of Naples and arrested about 50 people they believe to be tied to the Naples mafia, the Camorra.
The raids took place in Caserta and targeted the Iovine clan, believed to be responsible for bribing civil servants and fixing elections in order to secure valuable contracts.
Those arrested in the raids have been charged with crimes ranging from extortion and money laundering to illegal arms possession.
Naples has been struggling to manage the growing problem with trash as streets have become littered with debris. The Camorra is responsible for many aspects of the trash industry including the collection, treatment and disposal.
