A Japanese court has sentenced Tetsuya Shiroo to death after the gangster shot and killed the mayor of Nagasaki, Iccho Ito, last year.
The 60-year-old Shiroo is thought to be linked to the notorious Yamaguchi-gumi crime syndicate in Japan. Shiroo was reportedly upset with the city government after he was denied a loan and wasn’t compensated for a traffic accident.
In April 2007 Shiroo followed Ito during a campaign stop and shot him twice. Judge Yoshimichi Matsuo called the crime “outrageous and heinous” and said, “This was a crime that shook the democratic system from its root and was equivalent to denying the electoral process.”
