The Alamo was the first of a chain of historic Spanish missions built along the San Antonio River, built in 1516. By the 18th century, the building was converted into a fortress by the Spanish Empire and used to educate the local Native Americans after they had been converted to Christianity. During the 19th century, the Alamo became the scene of many important military actions, the most famous being the 1836 Battle of the Alamo between Mexico and the Republic of Texas. For 13 days, the Mexican army surrounded the fortress, which was occupied by rebel Texians. Eventually they conquered it and killed nearly all the rebels, but this battle stalled the Mexican army and eventually allowed the rebel forces, led by Sam Houston, to win the war. Today, the Alamo is a museum with several exhibits depicting the history of this historic battle as well as much of the history of Texas.
The River Walk, also known as Paseo del Rio in Spanish, is one of San Antonio's most prominent features. The River Walk is lined with dozens of elegant shops and restaurants, including the Hard Rock Cafe, Canarias, On the Half Shell Oyster Bar, V Bar, Dick’s Last Resort, and the Rainforest Cafe.
