Disabled Student Alex Barton “Voted Out” of Class by Classmates

A five-year-old special needs student was voted out of his class by his classmates at Morningside Elementary School. Alex Barton was in kindergarten at the school but won’t be returning because of the incident. His mother, Melinda Barton, is now considering a suit against his teacher.

The class was allowed to tell Alex what they didn’t like about him, which included comments about him being “disgusting and annoying.” The students were then allowed to vote if he should stay or leave the classroom. Alex was voted out by 14 to 2.

Barton says her son has suffered emotionally from the incident. She says he won't be retuning to the class became he continues to relive the experience.

Florida authorities are not pursuing the matter as the state attorney’s officer “concluded the matter did not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed.”
