$200,000 Balloon Escapes; World Record Attempt Grounded

A $200,000 helium balloon that slipped away from a flight crew Tuesday grounded attempts by a French skydiver who had hoped to set a world record for the highest altitude reached by a man in a balloon.

Michel Fournier, who sold most of his possessions to finance the operations, has spent nearly $20 million and two decades on his quest.

The 64-year-old says the data he hopes to collect during his record-breaking attempt will help astronauts and others survive at high altitudes.

Tuesday’s launch over the plains of Saskatchewan in Canada failed after the specially-designed balloon escaped technicians and rose without Fournier.
