Shark Attacks off Mexico’s Pacific Coast Worst in 30 years

An American surfer was attacked by a shark off Mexico’s Pacific coastline marking the third such attack in the last two months. A Mexican surfer was killed Friday by a 6-foot shark, and a 24-year-old American was killed in late April after being attacked by a shark while surfing.

The two deaths were the first attributed to shark attacks off Mexico’s Pacific coast in more than 30 years.

Bruce Grimes of Texas was bitten on the arm by a shark while surfing off the beach near Playa Linda Saturday. After managing to pull himself free, the 49-year-old made it to the beach and was able to drive himself to a hospital where he received 100 stitches.

The rare attacks have Mexican Navy patrolling the waters near the resort areas of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo.
