Daughter of Austrian “Horror Dad” Wakes From Coma
The 19-year-old daughter of Austrian “horror dad,” Josef Fritzl, has woken from a coma nearly a month after doctors placed her in the artificial state to treat severe kidney damage and organ failure.
An almost incomprehensible series of events led to the hospitalization of Kerstin, all orchestrated by the 73-year-old Josef Fritzl.
Fritzl was responsible for holding his elder daughter Elisabeth captive in the basement of his
Amstetten, Austria house. For 24 years Elisabeth was locked below the surface and subjected to various forms of abuse from her father. Elisabeth would eventually give birth to seven children from her father, the oldest being Kerstin.
Earlier this year Kerstin collapsed in the cellar and Fritzl took her to the hospital where it was discovered she had been suffering from a serious infection. She was then placed in an artificial coma so that doctors could treat the infection and over the course of a few days Fritzl’s secret was revealed.
Fritzl has since been jailed while Elisabeth and her five children remain in a psychiatric clinic near the hospital in which Kerstin is being treated. Elisabeth had seven children with her father but one died in infancy.
Kerstin’s condition is still being closely monitored as doctors slowly bring her back from the coma and want to be sure the infection did not leave her with brain damage.
