A Third of Iowan Town Destroyed by Deadly Tornado

More than a third of Parkersburg, Iowa has been destroyed by a deadly tornado that left a path of destruction at least 43 miles long.

The tornado that touched down Monday around 6 p.m. claimed the lives of seven people and damaged hundreds of homes and businesses in the northeastern Iowa town.

The mile-wide tornado packed winds of 165 mph, leaving many to believe the National Weather Service will classify the tornado as an EF3, one of the most powerful category storms on the Fujita scale.

President George Bush has declared the town a federal disaster area.
