Salmon Rescued from Chilean Volcano

After evacuating people from an area threatened by a volcanic eruption in southern Chile, workers have returned to the area to rescue more than 6,000 tons of salmon from local fisheries.

Since the volcano began erupting on May 2, residents of the town of Chaiten, along with pets and thousands of livestock, have been rescued.

Authorities returned Tuesday to move more than 600,000 salmon from a fish farm located just eight miles from the volcano.

According to the association of private salmon industries in Chile, that amounts to about 1.5 percent of the annual production of Chile’s salmon industry, which has exports of more than $2 billion per year.
