Body Found in Vermont Creek Believed to be that of Nicholas Garza

Police in Middlebury, Vermont pulled a body from the Otter Creek on Tuesday and they believe it may be that of 19-year-old Nicholas Garza.

Garza was from Albuquerque, New Mexico but had been attending Middlebury College and was in his freshman year when he disappeared Feb. 5. Despite large scale search efforts Garza’s disappearance continued to baffle authorities.

Searchers returned to Otter Creek on Tuesday where they discovered a body among a pile of debris under a waterfall. Garza’s mother, Natalie Garza, was at the scene and confirmed that the body was that of her son. A wallet belonging to Garza was also discovered on the body.

Shortly after the discovery Natalie Garza issued a statement that read:

"Nicholas had a wit that was quick smart and sure, but moreover, humble. He cherished his family, especially his younger brother Damon. He was a serious young man; his integrity and perception of life were beyond his short years. Grace to him was given from birth, as was his love of literature, music, and philosophy. We will miss his thick black hair and easy laughter. Nothing in life has prepared us for such a loss. We hope to honor him in the simple and pure way that he lived his life. He was adored, deeply loved, and those who knew him were blessed with an extraordinary man. Thank you to the thousands of letters, e-mails, and prayers."
