Earle H. Hagen, who composed the theme music for the popular TV show ‘The Andy Griffith Show,’ has died at the age of 88. He passed away at his home in Rancho Mirage Monday. Hagen’s wife Laura said he has been ill for some time.
Hagen composed music for more than 3,000 episodes of hit TV shows including “That Girl,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “I Spy,” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.”
“He loved it. The music just flowed from him, and he would take off one hat and put on another and go on to the next show,” his wife said.
Hagen also performed with top bands and wrote three books. He wrote one of the first textbooks on movie composing titled “Scoring for Films.” Hagen also wrote his autobiography, “Memoirs of a Famous Composer – Nobody Ever Heard Of.”
Hagen is survived by his second wife, two sons, three step children, and four grandchildren.
