Nepal’s Throne Abolished; King Has 15 Days to Leave Palace

Nepal’s centuries-old throne is hours away from being abolished as the country is expected to be declared a republic.

Members of the newly elected Constituent Assembly were sworn in on Tuesday, and in their first act of business on Wednesday, it is expected they will declare Nepal a republic.

King Gyanendra, who is expected to relinquish the throne peacefully, will be given 15 days to vacate the palace.

This will mark an end to the 239-year-old Shah dynasty as thousands gathered on the streets of Katmandu Wednesday to celebrate “republic” day.
