Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, either step down or he will remove his Labour Party from the coalition government that currently exists.
Olmert has been dogged by allegations that he has accepted bribes while prime minister yet he has denied all accusations and has refused to step down. Olmert has admitted that he accepted money while he was mayor of Jerusalem; money he insists was for legal use during his re-election campaign.
Barak has said that Olmert is incapable of handling the affairs of the country while dealing with his personal problems and has insisted he would remove the 19 Labour Party MPs from the 120 seat Knesset. Olmert’s Kadima Party has 29 seats in the Knesset and has relied on the Labour Party as a key ally in the coalition government.
