Controversial Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has apparently requested a private visit with Pope Benedict XVI, possibly during the President’s visit to Rome while participating in the United Nations summit on global food service June 3-5.
The international community has condemned Ahmadinejad for comments he has made regarding the destruction of Israel as well as fostering doubts about the Holocaust. Ahmadinejad has also called the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States “suspicious.”
While Benedict has called for nations to carry diplomatic talks with Iran it is unlikely he will actually meet with Ahmadinejad during the June conference.
