The leader of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, a offshoot of al-Qaeda based in North Africa, has claimed that a French hostage has been killed in retaliation for a failed rescue attempt launched by French and Mauritanian troops.
While there has been no confirmation of the murder of Michel Germaneau, a retired engineer who was kidnapped while in Niger in April, al-Jazeera broadcast a message from the leader of the al-Qaeda faction declaring the 78-year-old had been killed.
Abdelmalek Droukdel, in his announcement, said Germaneau was killed because of Thursday’s failed rescue attempt that left six militants dead. Droukdel stated “As a quick response to the despicable French act, we confirm that we have killed the hostage Germaneau in revenge for our six brothers who were killed in the treacherous operation.”
Last month the group said that Germaneau would be executed by July 26 if a number of its members weren’t released from prison.
