Are summer academic programs all they're cracked up to be? The answer appears to be yes and no.
Many teen summer camps that pass themselves off as summer study programs are glorified vacations for rich kids, offering minimal academic activity and a lot of free time at colleges from the Rockies to Paris.
One academic summer camp, however, is all about student enrichment. SuperCamp is an intensive 10-day program for high school students (7 days for middle school students) that deals with the whole child, developing powerful new learning skills that apply to all subject areas and advancing students' life skills that benefit them in everything from character development to increased confidence.
The difference between the so-called summer study programs and SuperCamp's true summer enrichment program is evident in the results. Research with SuperCamp grads reveal increases in grades, motivation, confidence and self-esteem among the majority of students. These results came from a major study with over 6,000 grads and are supported by annual surveys with grads and grad parents.
In 2010 SuperCamp's programs are held at nine schools across the country, including UCLA, Stanford, Brown, and Wake Forest. More information is available at the website and by calling 800-285-3276.
