The Supreme Court in the Seychelles has sentenced eleven Somali pirates to ten years in prison after they were found guilty of attempting to hijack a coastguard boat last December.
In handing down the sentencing the Supreme Court found eight of the men had been guilty of piracy while three others were found guilty of aiding and abetting piracy. Seychelles President James Michel hailed the ruling as a victory for his country and against piracy, saying “Their conviction is a historical milestone as it is the first time that a piracy trial is successfully prosecuted in the Seychelles.”
There are another 29 Somali men charged with piracy that are awaiting trial in the Seychelles.
