EU Foreign Ministers Adopt Tougher Sanctions on Iran

In an attempt to derail Iran’s nuclear program EU foreign ministers have adopted tougher sanctions against the country, targeting their foreign trade, financial services and oil and gas sectors.

The decision by the EU ministers comes about a month after the United States strengthened their sanctions against Iran due to its continued refusal to halt their nuclear work. The U.S., along with several other European nations, has accused Iran of using their nuclear program as a means to develop weapons, an accusation Iran has vehemently denied.

Last month the UN Security Council put added pressure on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, approving a fourth round of sanctions that targeted the industries in which they hold a heavy influence.

Monday’s announcement from EU foreign ministers could be the determining factor in whether Iran is capable of continuing their nuclear program. Because Iran depends heavily on their oil and gas sector to fuel their economy the latest round of sanctions could eliminate the country’s ability to pay for their nuclear program.
