Cancer Conference Alert: Highlights from ACI’s 12th national conference on improving comprehensive cancer programs

Leading hospital administrators and physicians specializing in cancer care gathered for a two-day symposium in Texas

Active Communications International, a leader in conference planning and production, held its twelfth conference on Adding, Updating and Expanding Comprehensive Cancer Programs and Services for Hospitals and Health Systems from July 22-23, 2010.  The conference addressed ways in which medical facilities - specifically cancer care programs - can enhance and gain an edge with their programs in an increasingly populated world facing a highly challenging economy.  Leading experts provided case studies, research findings and successful organizational models from leading cancer programs around the country.

Topics discussed within the conference focused on the realization of effective business strategies, aiming for long-term success, as well as enhancing the value of cancer patient care.  Speakers also presented on the utilization of emerging cancer technologies and how to provide a more complete range of cancer services, including support groups, nutrition, non-traditional and holistic treatments, genetic counseling and more.

Developing technology and alternative cancer therapies are both very important to the development of new mesothelioma cancer treatments.  A highly aggressive disease known as mesothelioma occurs following the development of malignant cells in the lining of the chest, abdomen and heart and is most often a result of asbestos exposure.  Since the disease develops so rapidly, it is often not detected until the later stages, by which time the patient has a highly unfavorable prognosis of about six to 18 months.  There is currently no mesothelioma cure.

Patients suffering from mesothelioma require doctors with knowledge of cutting-edge and alternative treatments, as the disease is only slightly decelerated with traditional treatments (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation).  Cancer care program administrators and physicians who attended the conference were be given the opportunity to develop their services in order to provide better care for patients suffering from aggressive cancers like malignant mesothelioma.

The conference spanned two days and was held in Dallas, TX.  Cancer program administrators and physicians specializing in oncology from around the country were in attendance, and this year’s key speakers included:

Donna Bowers, JD, RHIA., Vice President, Baylor University Medical Center

Joy Soleiman, Clinical Administrator, MPA Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson Bluemile Life Sciences Building, President Association of Cancer Executives

In an increasingly competitive environment for cancer care, the knowledge and experience provided at the Comprehensive Cancer Programs and Services conference will allow the nation’s medical leaders to further develop cancer treatment programs, emphasizing efficiency and thorough treatment for cancer patients.
