Diane Odell Dies After 58 Years in Iron Lung

A Tennessee woman who spent 58 years of her life in an iron lung has died after a power failure shut down the machine. Dianne Odell, 61, was diagnosed with polio at 3-years-old and was confined to the metal tube ever since.

Odell died Wednesday when electricity was knocked out at her home and family members were unable to get an emergency generator to work. “We did everything we could do but we couldn’t keep her breathing. Dianne had gotten a lot weaker over the past several months and she just didn’t have the strength to keep going,” said a family member.

She spent her entire life in the 7-foot-long tube but that didn’t stop her from getting her high school diploma, go to college and write a children’s book.
