Simba Makoni, the former finance minister for Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and recent presidential candidate, has refused to back Mugabe or Morgan Tsvangirai in the upcoming run-off scheduled in June.
Makoni placed third in the March 29 election, trailing Mugabe and Tsvangirai in the polls. Rather than endorse either candidate Makoni has pushed for a coalition style government that places Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party and Tsvangirai’s Movement for democratic Change party in a power-sharing position.
Tsvangirai has insisted that he won a majority of the votes in the first round and should assume the presidency yet the official election results showed Mugabe was close enough to force a run-off. Mugabe has held office since Zimbabwe won independence in 1980.
