Egypt plans to conduct a DNA test on a 3,500-year-old mummy to determine if the remains are those of King Thutmose I.
Funded by the Disney Channel, a $5 million DNA lab was acquired to aid Egypt’s efforts in the identification of mummies.
The 3,500-year-old mummy believed to be Thutmose I will be removed from its tomb in Luxor’s Valley of the Kings and flown to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo where DNA testing will begin Friday.
Egypt’s antiquities chief, Zahi Hawass, insisted the DNA testing on Egyptian mummies be performed by Egyptian experts. Results of the findings may not be made public as Hawass has cited grounds of national security around the information.
