China Banning Free Plastic Bags in Stores; Promises Green Olympics

A nationwide measure in China banning free plastic bags in stores goes into effect Sunday as the country begins efforts to cut down on waste and improve the environment.

The measure will eliminate the flimsiest plastic bags and force stores to charge for more durable plastic bags.

The Chinese currently use 3 billion plastic bags per day, and officials estimate the measure will cut that amount by a third.

According to the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, the plastic bags are virtually indestructible and have been clogging landfills since they take years to break down.

Beijing has advocated for a green Olympic Games this summer.
