Ecologist, businessman and U.S. Senate Candidate, Rand Knight, received the endorsement today of the Georgia AFL-CIO, having received over two-thirds of the vote. Knight addressed the AFL-CIO Federal Candidates Screening Committee and C.O.P.E Board Wednesday. He outlined his "Green Deal" Plan, which could create over 200,000 new jobs in Georgia.
The Union’s endorsement was not just a show of support for Knight and his candidacy, but a vote of support for a new era of green-collar jobs, energy independence and business people, labor unions, community leaders and elected officials standing together to solve problems of the 21st century.
"I'm deeply honored to receive the support of an organization that fights for working families all across Georgia," Knight said. "We share the common goals of creating universal access to healthcare, creating new prevailing wage jobs, and turning our economy around. Together we can create new "Green Jobs" and provide more opportunities for our children and future generations."
Richard Ray, President of the Georgia AFL-CIO, cited Knight's knowledge and firm stance on issues directly affecting labor unions as integral qualities for a Senator. “Rand is a very passionate young man, very much in tune with the issues that the labor unions have on their agenda, such as health care for everyone.
"The working families of Georgia are struggling to raise families, pay their taxes, support education, and cope with the continued increase in healthcare costs, " Ray said. "Rand Knight knows how to combine energy and the environment with the economy and working families. Rand is listening to working Georgians and he shares our goals."
Knight has been running a truly statewide race, having already addressed communities in over 70 counties in the past 5 months. He earned the Teamsters Union- Local 728's endorsement in February and is excited to add the Georgia AFL-CIO's endorsement to a growing list. Knight also has earned the personal endorsements of Former Georgia Congresswoman, Denise Majette, incoming President of the Northeast Georgia Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Keith Johnson, and former Mexican Consul Teodoro Maus.
"The working men and women of Georgia deserve a champion in the United States Senate, someone who has fire-in-the-belly and has the guts to wear down these Republicans, but also knows when to reach across the aisle," Knight said. "We have an opportunity here in Georgia to create jobs, lower our gas prices through renewable energy resources, and revitalize our struggling economy. We are being held hostage by these energy producing countries. We must stop sending billions of dollars over seas for foreign oil. We can create diesel and gasoline in our own backyard using agricultural waste. When I am elected to the United States Senate I will work to ensure that Georgia's working families are not forgotten. The sun is setting on Saxby Chambliss, it's Knight time!"
