Myanmar Forcing Cyclone Victims from Refugee Camps

Survivors of Cyclone Nargis are being forced from refugee camps by the ruling military junta of Burma, also known as Myanmar.

The United Nations reported Friday that government camps established to help those left homeless by the May 2 cyclone are virtually empty.

UNICEF aid workers indicated refugees were being moved from the camps and taken back to their devastated villages in the Irrawaddy delta with little or no relief supplies.

Relief workers also told of the military junta denying victims’ aid because they had lost their government identity cards.

Myanmar officials reported the death toll from the cyclone is approaching 78,000 with more than 56,000 still missing.
