The devastating crane collapse that occurred in New York’s Upper East Side on Friday morning has left at least one dead and two seriously injured.
Shortly after 8:00 a.m. a crane that had been used to construct a high rise collapsed and smashed into a 23-story apartment building at East 91st Street and First Avenue. The top floor of that apartment building was sheared off, crashing onto the street below.
A construction worker inside the cab was killed when the structure toppled 20-stories. At last two workers on the ground were severely injured, one with a massive gash across his chest.
New York Fire Fighters arrived on the scene and quickly began pulling victims from the twisted steel and debris that fell from the apartment.
Several residents in the area had complained about the quick pace at which developers were constructing buildings, leaving the belief that safety measures were being ignored. When the collapse occurred don Friday morning outrage from those residents quickly made their way to reporters and cameras.
According to New York Governor David Patterson, “There's no need to speculate now on how this happened. That will all be investigated, but certainly these types of accidents are all too frequent.”
It has been just over two months since a crane collapsed in New York that left six dead including a woman visiting the city to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
