Mass Evacuations Feared in China as Quake Dams Swell

Authorities in China fear mass evacuations may become necessary as dams formed by earthquake debris begin to swell.

More than 1 million people face evacuation from a Sichuan province valley if a dam formed by a quake-triggered landslide begins to collapse.

The dam, which spawned a massive lake now called the Tangjiashan, is threatening to collapse. Workers are digging drainage channels in an effort to drain the lake.

Chinese officials say people will only be evacuated if it appears the quake dam will actually collapse. They are implementing a communications system to safely evacuate dozens of villages in the potential path of floodwaters.
