An Australian woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl despite nearly impossible odds due to an ectopic pregnancy.
Because the baby developed in Meera Thangarajah’s ovary and not her uterus the likelihood of a successful birth was considered a long-shot yet doctors didn’t realize the situation until they performed a Caesarean section during delivery.
Had they known prior to the birth of Durga they would likely have recommended termination due to the severe risks posed to Meera. Ectopic pregnancies often end in miscarriages or cause dangerous bleeding.
The ectopic pregnancy was made even rarer in that the baby developed inside the ovary itself.
Despite pre-natal scans during the pregnancy doctors never noticed the abnormality until it was time to deliver the baby. At that point they saw the fully developed baby inside the ovary, threatening to rupture the organ.
Doctors at the Darwin Private Hospital in Australia’s Northern Territory called the successful birth a one in a million chance.
