Barack Obama Leaves Trinity United Church of Christ

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have resigned their membership from Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago after several controversial issues involving the church led to questions about Obama’s involvement.

Obama made the announcement on Saturday, noting that he no longer wanted the congregation to be subjected to media scrutiny due to his membership.

Trinity United Church of Christ came to the forefront of Obama’s campaign shortly after videos surfaced in which the pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., was heard condemning America, implying the government introduced HIV to eradicate the black population, and saying the terrorists acts of Sept. 11, 2001 were what America had coming.

Obama tried to distance himself from the remarks but the controversy never settled as detractors insisted Obama’s close relationship with Wright should be questioned.

Just as the controversy appeared to be settling another close friend of Obama, Rev. Michael Pfleger, spoke at the church and ignited more controversy as he mocked Hillary Clinton, insinuating that she felt she was entitled to the Democratic nomination because she was white.

Pfleger’s comments once again put Obama on the defensive and he found the only answer was to remove himself from the church.

Obama wrote a letter to the church in which he stated:

“It’s clear that now that I’m a candidate for president, every time something is said in the church by anyone associated with Trinity, including guest pastors, the remarks will be imputed to me, even if they totally conflict with my long-held views, statements and principles.”

“It’s not fair to the other members of the church who seek to worship in peace, so our faith remains strong and I suspect we will find another church home for our family.”
