Australia has officially ended combat operations in Iraq with plans to return the remaining 550 combat troops home over the next few weeks.
The move came as no surprise as Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had made it a campaign promise to bring an end to his country’s combat operations in Iraq. On Sunday that promise came true as the Australian flag was lowered at Camp Terendak in the southern city of Talil.
While the combat troops have been pulled, Rudd remained committed to keeping several troops in Iraq for security measures including the guarding of diplomats.
Australia had combat troops in Iraq for more than five years but the pressure to pull the troops out grew as many Australians felt their involvement made them a target for terrorists.
