Zimbabwe Opposition Leader Arthur Mutambara Arrested

Arthur Mutambara, a senior opposition leader in Zimbabwe, has been arrested and charged with publishing falsehoods and contempt of court following an article he wrote criticizing President Robert Mugabe.

Mutambara has accused Mugabe of destroying Zimbabwe’s economy and using the military for intimidation as a means of holding his country’s leadership position.

Mutambara’s article appeared in the independent newspaper The Standard last month and led to the arrest of the editor.

While he no longer aligns himself with main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, Mutambara has pledged to work with him and his Movement for Democratic Change party in order to defeat Mugabe in the June 27 run-off election.
