At Least Eight Dead Due to Overcrowding at Soccer Match in Liberia

At least eight people died on Sunday after fans filled the Samuel K. Doe stadium in Monrovia, Liberia beyond capacity causing the victims to suffocate.

The fans had filed into the 33,000 seat stadium to witness a World Cup qualifying match between Liberia and Ghana but two hours before the start time the stadium had already been filled to capacity.

Attempts to close the gates failed as more fans filed in, leading to the overcrowding and individuals being crushed.
