Tatum O'Neal, the Oscar Award-winning actress and ex-wife of tennis legend John McEnroe, was arrested Sunday for buying crack cocaine.
O'Neal, 44, was arrested at 7.30pm on Sunday by detectives from Manhattan South Narcotics.
O'Neal, who at 10 years old became the youngest actor ever to win an Academy Award, told police that she was doing "research" for an upcoming acting role.
Police found a pipe on O'Neal, the daughter of actor Ryan O'Neal, but they said the pipe was clean. Alan Garcia, the suspected drug dealer that sold her the crack cocaine, was arrested as well.
O'Neal was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, while Garcia's charge was criminal sale of a controlled substance.
O'Neal is a recovering drug addict and alcohol. In 1996, O'Neal completed addiction rehabiltation and claimed to be clean.
O'Neal will be the upcoming movie Saving Grace, which will be released sometime this year. The movie, which is about the trials and tribulations of a couple after the husband's sister is released from the local asylum and comes to live with the family, also features Michael Biehn, Joel Gretsch and Penelope Ann Miller.
O'Neal won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Paper Moon in 1974, becoming the youngest actor ever to win an Academy for a competitive role. Shirley Temple won an honorary Oscar in 1935 at the age of six.
