Danish Embassy in Pakistan Bombed, at least Five Dead

A car bomb exploded outside the Danish embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan on Monday, killing at least five people and injuring several dozen.

Many suspect the terrorist act was carried out by al-Qaeda or one of its affiliates in retaliation for a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad being reprinted in a Danish newspaper.

Following the printing of the cartoon al-Qaeda’s number two man, Ayman al-Zawahri appeared in a video declaring, “I urge and incite every Muslim who can harm Denmark to do so in support of the Prophet, God's peace and prayers be upon him, and in defense of his honorable stature."

The scene at the embassy was chaos as bloodied embassy workers ran from the building while rescue workers arrived to deal with substantial injuries. Many of those injured were struck by flying metal and glass.

Both the Swedish and Norwegian embassies closed following the blast.

Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller condemned the bombing stating, “It is terrible that terrorists do this. The embassy is there to have a cooperation between the Pakistani population and Denmark, and that means they are destroying that.”
