Doctors at Duke University Medical Center will be operating on Sen. Edward M. Kennedy; one month after the iconic Democrat was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor known as a malignant glioma.
Kennedy will undergo approximately six-hours of surgery Monday morning and will remain in North Carolina for about a week to recuperate. The 76-year-old will then travel home to Massachusetts to begin chemotherapy treatments.
Kennedy released a statement prior to Monday’s surgery in which he said, “"I am deeply grateful to the people of Massachusetts and to my friends, colleagues and so many others across the country and around the world who have expressed their support and good wishes as I tackle this new and unexpected health challenge. I am humbled by the outpouring and am strengthened by your prayers and kindness."
On May 17 Kennedy was hospitalized following a seizure. It was then uncovered that he had a malignant glioma and plans to treat the cancer were quickly outlined.
