Anne d'Harnoncourt, the longtime chief executive of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, died Monday in his Philadelphia home. D'Harnoncourt was 64.
According to reports from the Museum, d'Harnoncourt died at home in Philadelphia on Monday morning of natural causes. Her death was unexpected, according to Museum spokesman Norman Keyes.
D'Harnoncourt started at the museum in 1967 as a curatorial assistant. She became museum director in 1982 and succeeded Robert Montgomery Scott in 1996 as the museum's chief executive.
D'Harnoncourt is the only child of Rene d'Harnoncourt, the famed director of New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and his wife, the fashion designer Sara Carr. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Rishel, a senior curator at the museum.
