Senator Ted Kennedy Underwent Successful Brain Tumor Surgery

Sen. Edward "Ted" Kennedy underwent successful brain tumor surgery on Monday at Duke University Medical Center.

Kennedy selected Dr. Allan Friedman, MD to perform the surgery, which Friedman did successfully in three-and-a-half hours. Kennedy will begin recuperating at Duke for about a week.

"After completing treatment, I look forward to returning to the United States Senate and to doing everything I can to help elect Barack Obama as our next president," said Senator Kennedy

After his week stay at Duke, Kennedy will begin a full recovery. "After a brief recuperation, he will begin targeted radiation at Massachusetts General Hospital and chemotherapy treatment," said Friedman.

Kennedy was diagnosed with malignant glioma, a brain tumor, in the left side of the parietal lobe in his brain. Malignant glioma is a form of cancer that has signs of a bleak future.

Kennedy was initially taken to Massachusetts General Hospital on May 18 after suffering a seizure at his family's compound at Hyannisport, Massachusetts. While at the hospital, Kennedy was diagnosed with the tumor.

Friedman is one of the nation's premier neurologists. He currently serves as the Guy L. Odom Professor of Neurological Surgery at Duke University Medical Center and the Deputy Director, The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke.

In addition, Friedman is the Neurosurgeon-in-Chief of Duke University Hospital and the Program Director of the hospital's Division of Neurosurgery/Department of Surgery.
