Monsoon Rains Kill Hundreds in Pakistan and Afghanistan

Monsoon rains have killed hundreds of people in northwest Pakistan and into Afghanistan as river banks have burst, washing away entire villages and causing buildings and bridges to collapse.

The death toll in Pakistan alone has topped 300 people and that is expected to climb significantly as many areas remain impossible to reach due to the region’s worst flooding in nearly a century. Heavy rains have also caused flooding into Afghanistan where at last 60 people have been confirmed dead.

While several of the deaths have been attributed to drowning a number have been caused by landslides, building collapses as well as electrocution.

Forecasters have predicted the rains will continue, making efforts to reach those in the hardest hit areas nearly impossible. For those who do have access to roadways they have experienced massive gridlock as the main road heading toward the south is a completely packed with vehicles.
