Chinese Officials Force Grieving Parents from Courthouse; Parents want to Sue over School Collapse

Police in China forcibly removed more than 100 grieving parents from a courthouse in Sichuan province where they were protesting the deaths of their children in poorly constructed schools that collapsed during the 7.9 magnitude earthquake last month.

The protest Tuesday came to a head as parents shouted “We want to sue!” They are accusing contractors of cutting corners when the schools were built.

More than 270 students died when the walls of one high school collapsed. The rubble from the school showed that iron wire had been used in construction instead of steel reinforcing bars. The May 12 earthquake destroyed 7,000 classrooms.

The Chinese government says the death toll from the worst disaster in three decades climbed to 69,107 Tuesday, with more than 18,230 people still missing.
