Rain Hampers Efforts to Drain Quake Lakes in China

Efforts by Chinese officials to drain water from a huge quake lake formed following the May 12 earthquake have been delayed due to heavy rains.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake sent landslides crashing into a river in Sichuan province, and water levels that have been steadily rising behind the quake-spawned dams are now threatening to flood surrounding areas.

Workers had been digging runoff channels to remove the water as authorities worried the quake  dam could burst, but rainy weather forced them to hold off for several days.

The Chinese government implemented emergency evacuation plans for thousands, already displaced by the earthquake, who are now in the potential path of floodwaters.
