Rep. Jim Clyburn Endorses Sen. Barack Obama

House Majority Whip Rep. James "Jim" Clyburn (D-S.C.) endorsed Senator Barack Obama on Tuesday morning.

The Clyburn endorsement is key for Obama as Clyburn is a key superdelegate, one of many expected superdelegate endorsements for Obama leading up to the Democratic National Convention.

"I believe the nomination of Senator Obama is our Party's best chance for victory in November, and our nation's best hope for much needed change," Clyburn said in a statement. "Senator Obama brings a new vision for our future and new voters to our cause. He has created levels of energy and excitement that I have not witnessed since the 1960's."

Clyburn is the third-highest ranking official in the House of Representatives behind House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). He is the second African American (behind Bill Gray of Pennsylvania) and the first South Carolinian to hold the position.
